Understanding SEER Ratings When Buying a New AC

Decoding Air Conditioning Efficiency
If you're shopping for a new air conditioner in Ontario, you've probably encountered the term "SEER." But what does it mean, and how does it impact your wallet and comfort during those humid Muskoka summers?
What is SEER?
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It measures the cooling output of an air conditioner over a typical cooling season, divided by the energy it consumes in Watt-Hours. Simply put, the higher the SEER rating, the more energy-efficient the unit is.
Minimum Requirements in Canada
Currently, the minimum standard for new air conditioners in Canada is SEER 13 or 14, depending on the region. However, many modern high-efficiency units boast ratings of SEER 18, 20, or even higher.
Is a Higher SEER Worth the Cost?
While a SEER 20 unit costs more upfront than a SEER 14 unit, it will consume significantly less electricity. If you plan to stay in your home for many years, the monthly savings on your hydro bill will eventually offset the initial purchase price.
At Art of Airflow, we help homeowners across Barrie and the GTA calculate the exact ROI of different SEER ratings to find the perfect balance between upfront cost and long-term savings.
